GWR 2-8-0 Tank Engine 5239 'Goliath' is the duty engine on 26 June 2008 and this video is taken on the Kingswear side of Goodrington Sands Station as the train departs and climbs the bank from sea level up to Churston Station (195 ft above sea level).  On the same day 5239 is filmed departing from Churston for Paignton.  Churston is the second station between Paignton and Kingswear stations.  For more information on the engines featured on this page go to the Paignton and Dartmouth Railway by clicking on the link.
I was out on 23 June 2008 exploring the local area looking for good places to film and take photo' when along came the GWR 4-6-0 7827 Lydham Manor.  Unfortunately I didn't have my video camera with me!  'Lydham Manor' coasts down the incline to Goodrington Sands with the 'Devon Bell' Observation Car next to the engine. More comprehensive information relating to the Manor Class can be found on the following link to the Great Western Railway Archive
'Lydham Manor' sits at Paignton after completing the day's duties, and a crew member takes time out to talk to one of the many visitors.  I was there for two weeks at the end of June and beginning of July, and was impressed by the large number of passengers the railway attracted.  On several occasions I saw extra carriages added to accommodate coach parties. Take advantage of the 'Round Robin' trip.  This involves taking the train from Paignton to Kingswear, and river cruise up the River Dart to Totnes.  From Totnes the return to Paignton is on an open top bus.  You can also do the trip in the opposite direction.  Above is 'Goliath' on the 15.15 departure from Kingswear taken from the boat on the River Dart.  All in all a great day out!
A diesel shunter!  Every heritage railway needs one to perform all the menial tasks quicker and cheaper than a steam engine could do.  This particular example is D3014.  Now considered to be the O8xxx class.  For more information on diesel shunters visit the preserved shunters pages on this link. The text on the left obviously doesn't apply to 'Goliath' which is pictured removing extra carriages from the train following a block booking by a coach party or party's.  The carriages were taken of in preparation for the next day's journeys. More details about 5239 are available on the Great Western Railway Archive
